Brave has a new Copy Clean Link feature

Brave Software released an update for the stable version of the company’s Brave browser on September 27, 2022. The release notes for Brave version 1.44.101 are available, but a feature that was originally planned to be released with the new version from the browser, didn’t do this.

Copy Clean Link is a new privacy-focused feature that copies only the relevant parts of a website address. Some websites add strings to links that are irrelevant to load the correct resource on the website. This additional information is often used for tracking purposes, and several browser manufacturers have recently added protections to their browsers to manage it.

Mozilla, maker of Firefox, for example, released Firefox 102 with support for stripping known tracking parameters from URLs when opened in the web browser. Brave also removes some query parameters for several known tracking attempts.

The new Brave Browser feature can be used to copy website addresses without additional settings. To do this, simply right-click on the address bar and select the new option “Copy own link (main URL only)” from the context menu that opens. Brave removes excess parameters from the address, without changing its link destination.

The option to copy the full address, along with any settings that may not be needed, remains available. It is necessary because some sites use it to power certain features.

The copy function only works when you right click on links in the address bar. Brave Software plans to expand it to other areas of web pages open in the browser, but for now it only works in the address bar. In the future, Brave will include an option to copy the clean URL of any link displayed on a web page.

The feature should work on all sites, as it strips the “request” part of any address opened in the browser. Some users may be skilled enough to manually trim excess parts of URLs, others may appreciate the new option when sharing links or loading them into different applications on their own machines.

Copy Clean Links is available for testing in development editions of the Brave browser.

Closing words

Copy Clean Links requires right-click support on all links to make it really useful, as the majority of links aren’t currently covered by it. The URL must be opened in the address bar to currently use the feature.

Now you: what do you think about copying own links?
