Marvel’s Fantastic Beasts 3 and Shang-Chi share a curious connection in the form of a mythical Chinese creature featured in both films.
Months before release, the Fantastic Beasts: Secrets of Dumbledore The trailer has already revealed a curious connection between the Wizarding World and the MCUs Shang-Chi. The latest Marvel superhero to hit the big screen and the eleventh film in the Wizarding franchise don’t share many similarities, but there is one point that unites the two productions. While there is still a lot to learn about the next Fantastic beasts, what was revealed in the trailer is enough to identify an interesting Shang-Chi link.
One of the MCU’s four theatrical releases in 2021, Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten rings overcame the box office challenges of a theater-limiting pandemic to establish its title hero as one of Marvel’s very last central characters. The film starring Simu Liu as Shang-Chi claimed $ 432.2 million worldwide while also introducing a new set of characters and storylines to the MCU. Additionally, the film featured fan favorites like Wong and brought Abomination straight from The Incredible Hulk return to the Marvel universe. Fantastic Beasts 3, on the other hand, picks up the saga after controversies over the actors and the disappointing results of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. The third installment of the Fantastic Beasts franchise will now save or fail the Wizarding World series.
The curious link between the two films is in Chinese mythology. The Qilin (or Qirin), the earliest records of which date back to the 5th century BFE, is described as a chimerical creature with a dragon-shaped head in classical Chinese folklore and the body in the form of an equine whose time of coming Often equates to the birth or death of a new ruler. Both Shang-Chi and Fantastic Beasts 3 feature reinterpretations of the Qilin, each version being slightly different from the other.
In Shang-Chi, the Qilin is one of the many mystical creatures who live in Ta-Lo, the magical world that Shang-Chi and his friends must access while trying to stop the Ten Rings. The MCU version of the creature has greenish scales, antennae, and a long white beard along with the already established Qilin characteristics. Ben Kingsley’s infamous Mandarin forger Trevor Slattery even describes the magical being as a “strange horse.” In the Fantastic Beasts 3 trailer, it is possible to notice the presence of a baby version of the Qilin in Newt’s arms, still with Grindelwald, as he is represented by a symbol on the Portkey bell and his name is inscribed on a banner.
Two very different films, Fantastic beasts 3 and Shang-Chi share the same source of inspiration when adapting the Qilin. From Chinese folklore to the big screen, the creature has been reinterpreted in many ways throughout history, and it’s no different in the two blockbusters. Each with a unique approach, at the same time Fantastic Beasts 3 and Shang-Chi Honor a thousand-year-old piece of mythology and forge an unexpected connection between Marvel and the Wizarding World.
