I feel hurt when people associate my successes with having Richie sit on the VGMA board – KiDi

2022 VGMA Artist of the Year KiDi said it breaks her heart when people link her successes in the famed music awards program to Richie, her manager, serving on the board.

The Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) Artist of the Year, born Dennis Nana Dwamena, said he felt discredited for his hard work every time this statement was made.

“It’s crazy that every VGMA night when I go on social media, I always see comments like” as for KiDi [and co] they win because Richie is on set. A lot of things don’t hurt me, but sometimes I feel like that statement hurts me more,” he said.

The ‘Touch it’ hitmaker, speaking on the Great morning showMonday, after scooping five awards at the just-concluded VGMAs, said his successes are the result of hard work backed by a vigorous voting campaign ahead of awards night.

“There is a campaign and it’s not just me. Each team member embarks to join the campaign. It’s like a flock in the church – evangelism – everyone comes out to preach the word on KiDi; that ‘KiDi has been nominated so make sure you vote for him,’ he said.

He therefore finds it surprising that his successes are linked to the fact that Richie sits on the board of directors of the VGMAs. KiDi refuted any allegation to this effect, pointing out that “first, it’s not true and second, it discredits my hard work as an artist.

“[People who do that] try to say all the hard work doesn’t count because Richie’s on the board, but sometimes I don’t even know who’s on the board,” he said.

The musician, who failed to claim the top spot in 2021 after his famous phrase “I’ll be back”, returned to take home his first-ever Artist of the Year award.

KiDi beat stiff competition from Black Sherif, King Promise, Kuami Eugene, Sarkodie and Joe Mettle to come out on top.

On top of that, he won Reggae/Dancehall Song of the Year with the song “Touch It”, Vodafone’s Most Popular Song with the same song, Album of the Year (The Golden Boy) and Afrobeats Artist of the Year.
