Julia Roberts has revealed a remarkable connection to the late Martin Luther King Jr and his wife Coretta Scott King, claiming they paid the hospital bill for his birth in 1967.

The 55-year-old actress, born in Smyrna, Georgia, explained the couple made the move after her mother and father befriended the Kings while living in Atlanta and running a school theatre.

His parents, Betty Lou Bredemus and Walter Grady Roberts, were actors and playwrights who had co-founded the Atlanta Actors and Writers Workshop off Juniper Street in the city in 1963 and could not afford the high fees.

Julia confirmed the story to US broadcaster Gayle King in a clip showing her in conversation with the reporter last month, who has now been shared online by a fanafter sharing his surprise at the researchers who discovered the fact.

“One day Coretta King Scott called my mother and asked if her children could be part of the school because they were struggling to find a place that would accept her children.

‘My mum was like, ‘Sure, come on’ and they all became friends, and they helped us out of a jam.’

It was reported that a member of the Ku Klux Klan blew up a car outside one of Julia’s parents’ plays in 1965 in response to the role of King Jr’s daughter, Yolanda, in which she kissed a white actor.

Interviewer King hailed Julia’s parents’ decision as “amazing” because people weren’t seeing “little black kids interacting with little white kids in drama school” at the time.

Julia, who Matthew Perry, a famous Friends star from the mid-1990s, celebrated her 55th birthday on Friday by sharing a selfie of herself sipping on a cup of coffee surrounded by pink and gold balloons.

She captioned the photo: “Feeling the love and magic on my 55th birthday!” My cup is overflowing.

Julia also paid tribute to her husband Danny Moder and their life with their children, 17-year-old twins Hazel and Phinnaeus and their 15-year-old son Henry.

‘The life I built with my husband, [and] the life we have built with our children is the best,” she said. “Coming home at the end of the day, triumphantly, for them.”
