PRIYAGRAJ: Police in Uttar Pradesh have arrested the “mastermind” of the violence that erupted during a protest in Prayagraj after prayers on Friday June 10.
Names of some people linked to All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) have surfaced, Chief Superintendent of Prayagraj Police (SSP) Ajay Kumar said, adding that there may be more brains.
“Mastermind Javed Ahmed is detained, there could be more masterminds…Anti-social elements used underage children to throw stones at police and administration. Case registered under 29 crucial sections. Action will be taken under gangster law and the NSA,” he told reporters here.
“The names of some AIMIM people have surfaced, we are gathering evidence against them,” Kumar said.

The SSP said there were 70 named and more than 5,000 anonymous defendants in the violence. “Action will be taken under the Gangster Act and the NSA,” he added.
Police further said that the names of some people associated with AIMIM have surfaced, but they are collecting evidence.
Several incidents of violence including chanting and stone throwing were reported in several parts of Uttar Pradesh after Friday prayers when people started protesting the inflammatory statements of the suspended BJP spokesperson, Nupur Sharma, and expelled party leader Naveen Kumar Jindal.
Asked about actions against mastermind daughter Javed Ahmed, the SSP said: “Delhi student Javed’s daughter is also involved in such activities… If necessary, we will contact Delhi Police and send our teams .”
According to District Magistrate Sanjay Kumar Khatri, an FIR has been filed in connection with the violence and 68 people have been arrested so far.
