Residents of Velachery hailed the traffic police’s decision to allow the U-turn at the Taramani Link Road-Tansi Nagar 15th Street junction.
After the inauguration of the Velachery Bridge, one arm of which joined the Taramani Link Road and the other the ring road, the U-turn on Taramani Link Road was blocked for road safety reasons. This forced hundreds of motorists going from Vijay Nagar to areas such as Sarathy Nagar, Varadarajapuram, Secretariat Colony, Annai Indira Nagar and parts of Tansi Nagar, to make a detour of nearly 2 km to make it halfway. turn to Baby Nagar. To avoid the detour, several motorists were driving on the wrong side of the road.
Following representations by residents’ welfare associations to Police Commissioner Shankar Jiwal in December, senior traffic police officials were urged to investigate the situation and allow the U-turn at the same intersection.
On Friday, a police officer was posted to regulate traffic on the spot.
Social activist S. Kumararaja said the reintroduction of the U-turn at the 15th Tansi Nagar Street junction should bring relief to motorists.
Likewise, the proposed pedestrian path at the LIC Colony-Secretariat Colony junction would help walkers, especially school children, to safely cross the busy Taramani Link Road, he said.
