Random: An illustration in a retro Japanese magazine depicts Link as a woman

Update: Thanks to @HistoryofHyrule, we now have a much clearer look at the mysterious female Link spotted in the 1986 issue of Shonen Captain. More details on the origins of the image can be found in our original article below.

Original article (Tuesday 2 April 2019 04:30 BST): In 2015, The Legend of Zelda the fanbase went wild when Koei Tecmo confirmed that a female version of Link would be added to Legends of the Warriors of Hyrule. As official as ‘Linkle’ was, she might not necessarily have been the first female version of the iconic character.

Twitter account recently brought to light an incredibly old issue of Japan’s Shonen Captain magazine, dating back to 1986 – the same year the original Legend of Zelda game was released on the Famicom. As you can see above and below, the artwork depicts Link as a woman with red hair. It is thought to be a error on behalf of the magazine.

Even though it’s not faithful to the source material, we have to admit that it’s quite a beautiful work of art.
