The Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has inaugurated the construction works of the Ojota-Opebi Link Bridge and Approach Roads Project, which was started more than 20 years ago.
Sanwo-Olu said his administration recognized the need to start the project, saying it was vital to link Opebi Road from its rear end to the Lagos-Ikorodu road via Odo Iya-Alaro.
This, the governor said, would ease the traffic situation on the Opebi-Sheraton Link road and Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way.
According to him, the inauguration demonstrates the priority his administration has placed on the welfare and well-being of the people of the state, pointing out that the project will invariably reduce the travel time of motorists using the roads.
He also said that the project demonstrates his commitment to the vision of Greater Lagos in line with the traffic and transport management pillar of the THEMES Agenda.
He said: “We strongly believe that the 3.89 kilometer Ojota-Opebi Link Bridge and approach roads, when completed, will inject considerable life into the socio-economic activities of the thousands of people who live , do business or use the road to connect to their various destinations.
“We recognize the strategic importance of road infrastructure for sustainable development, which explains our administration’s focus on providing road infrastructure to achieve certain preconceived goals like reducing travel time on our roads; (saving significant man-hours that would otherwise have been lost to traffic); improved interconnectivity; provision of a better running surface; and eliminating traffic congestion while generally making life more meaningful for commuters in Lagos State.
“We have committed substantial resources to provide quality road, river and rail infrastructure to the people of Lagos and we have so far spent billions of naira upgrading the highways, improving our road infrastructure, completing the legacy projects previous administration and replace the lighting systems on our roads”.
Special Advisor on Works and Infrastructure, Aramide Adeyoye, said the Ojota-Opebi link bridge and approach road were designed over 20 years ago, but Sanwo-Olu, as part of consolidating the achievements of his administration’s policy on public infrastructure development, has decided to take the bull by the horns to ensure that the long-awaited project, which will transform all of Ikeja and its surroundings, will become a reality.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transport, Mr. Kamar Olowoshago, acknowledged the tenacity of the Governor and his team, the House of Assembly and other stakeholders, to ensure the successful inauguration of the project.
