Telecom Co Staff Detained Over Fake Sim Racket Link | Bhubaneswar News

Bhubaneswar: The Crime Branch, which recently busted a racket involved in the illegal sale of pre-activated SIM cards, on Wednesday arrested a senior official of a major private telecommunications company for his alleged link to a gang, which sold the SIM cards to some cybercriminals in different states.
The cyber crooks used the SIM cards to create fake WhatsApp accounts of Lok Sabha Chairman Om Birla for the purpose of cheating and defrauding.
“We found the complicity of Deepak Kumar Nayak (24), the territorial commercial director of the private telecom operator with the gang. Nayak, who was in charge of Gajapati district, transferred pre-activated SIM cards from other companies to his company. He has ties to Dusmant Sahoo, the main defendant, who provided the SIM cards to the cybercriminals,” a Crime Branch officer said.
Nayak had previously been arrested by Orkel police in Malkangiri district in connection with a trespassing and theft case in April 2019. Police had filed an indictment against him in the case.
The Crime Branch recently arrested Dusmant Sahoo, Sai Prakash Das and Abhinas Nayak for illegally selling the pre-activated SIM cards in and out of state. Subsequently, the Crime Branch arrested Dolagobinda Parida, a direct seller of company SIM cards for his connection to the gang.
The polling agency called on SPs to carry out regular raids on stores and sell illegal pre-activated SIM cards.
