Over the past few seasons, Rangers fans have been tempted and excited by the prospect of signing Joey Veerman and Andreas Skov Olsen, transfers that ultimately never materialized even though a recent report confirmed that we were indeed interested in bringing them to the club.
However, go back further and to January 2020 when Lovro Majer was allegedly the target of Dinamo Zagreb playmaker Steven Gerrard, who was 22 when the story first surfaced, who was allegedly being watched. for a while by the Ibrox side, however, dropped the move when they acquired Ianis Hagi and the Croatian had to wait until the summer of 2021 before signing for Stade Rennais in Ligue 1.
Majer cost the French side over £10m so that could have been the deal breaker when we keep tabs on the Croatia international, but it seems to have been money well spent with his value now set at £18m on Transfermarkt and no less a player than Luka Modric recommend him to Real Madrid.
This is a great example of how difficult it is for us to compete even with mid-table teams from the top five leagues and also clubs in the Netherlands and Belgium due to the extra revenue they get from their respective TV deals. , we have to play well in Europe just to follow these teams, let alone beat them regularly.
In the case of Majer, the difficulty for our scouting and recruiting team is to identify these players before they take their big step and before they attract too much attention, it is certainly not as easy as Football Manager suggests, because if it was, we wouldn’t be doing it. I’m not looking for a number eight or a right winger this summer.
