TikTok’s ‘all natural’ pink sauce and its link to reducing anxiety

While aesthetically pleasing content on TikTok is usually in the beauty business (hello haircuts), #FoodTok has found its own rather pretty trend. You’ll likely see something called “pink sauce” popping up on your social media feeds more and more in the near future, not least because the creator of the Barbie-colored condiment just signed a deal to bring it to the masses.

But first, what is pink sauce? It was concocted by TikTok user Chef Pii – real name Veronica Shaw – who is a single mother of two and a Miami-based private chef. She’s been serving this awesome dip to her customers for over a year, but it wasn’t until she featured it in a video on the site in June that it quickly went viral. His posts showing it as an accompaniment to everything from tacos to raw vegetables have racked up millions of views.

Chef Pii revealed in a later post that the pink sauce is made from a mixture of honey, chilli, garlic, sunflower seed oil and dragon fruit. However, it is also understood to contain a pinch of pink Himalayan sea salt, as well as less than two percent lemon juice, powdered milk and citric acid. The result is a “sweet, spicy and tart” flavor that she says can be enjoyed with anything.

Now, Chef Pii’s inclusion of dragon fruit not only provides its incredible pink color, but also offers important nutritional qualities. “Dragon fruit is rich in magnesium, which helped me overcome my anxiety,” she claimed in a video on her YouTube. “It’s my personal story, and it’s why I love dragon fruit.” Indeed, the fruit is incredibly rich in minerals – containing 18% of the recommended RDA in just 250g – which has been found by research to aid mood.

If you want to try making it at home, Chef Pii unfortunately hasn’t revealed exactly how she creates what she describes as her “edible and natural” pink sauce. However, beginning July 1, she launched The Pink Sauce to buy for $20 a bottle, which proved to be a quick sell.

Additionally, last week it was announced that Chef Pii had teamed up with US-based sauce maker, Dave’s Gourmet. They revealed in a press release, according to the Los Angeles Timethat they had together created a version of the sauce that was “less complicated, dairy-free, and free of artificial preservatives, colors, or flavors.”

It’s unclear when or if the pink sauce will be available in the UK. Meanwhile, others (like this YouTube user) have tried to decipher Chef Pii’s secret recipe to try at home. Good luck!
