LIVE STREAM WEST HAM v MAN CITY

Last season Pep Guardiola’s side finished one point above Liverpool as they played each other step by step for most of the campaign. The summer arrival of Erling Haaland, one of the two best prospects since Neymar left Brazil for Europe, has raised expectations to a new level. West Ham, meanwhile, are looking to build on last season’s 7th place finish, just one point behind Manchester United.

Key storylines and star actors

Having won six of the last 11 Premier League titles, Manchester City can now become the first team to score a hat-trick since rivals Manchester United did it from 2006 to 2009. There will be bumps in the road at the start so that Haaland will catch up with his teammates who have been playing in Guardiola’s system since joining in 2016, but the big bet ($80m, to be exact) is that the tall Norwegian’s goalscoring prowess will pay off in the Champions League, the latest elusive piece of the Man City puzzle. Will the transition cost them points at the start of the season, or will they start with or without immediate production from Haaland?

As for West Ham, the 2022-23 season could be something of a crossroads for the club as they find it increasingly difficult to break through the glass ceiling that is the Premier League’s ‘big six’. The Hammers slipped into 6th place two seasons ago (and turned it into a chase for the Europa League semi-finals) before falling back to 7th last campaign. Of course, finishing in the top six once every two years doesn’t make you a top six, and so West Ham’s big question is: can they realistically make the next step without spending £100m? dollars every summer for the next three years, has the sides of the big-six? Probably not, which means time is running out for David Moyes. If it is not likely to take them higher, the only direction they can go is down, and that will not suit the property after the significant investments already made.
